Can Someone Love You and Still Walk Away?

One of the most painful things about love is discovering that feelings and choices do not always match. Someone can look at you as though you are the most important person in the room. They can tell you they love you, share parts of themselves they rarely show anyone else, and create a connection that feels undeniably real—and then they can walk away.
That leaves you with one incredibly difficult question: If they really loved me, how could they leave?
We often assume that love should automatically make someone stay. If the feelings are strong enough, shouldn't they fight for the relationship? Shouldn't they communicate, work through their fears, and choose you? Human emotions, however, are rarely that simple.
Can Someone Really Love You and Leave?
Yes, someone can have genuine feelings for you and still make the decision to leave a relationship. But there is an important distinction: loving someone and being capable of building a healthy relationship with them are not necessarily the same thing.
A person can feel love and still struggle with vulnerability. They can miss you and still avoid you. They can feel an incredible attraction to you and still fear commitment. They can imagine what life with you might look like and still be unwilling or unable to make the changes necessary to create that life. Sometimes someone can also love you while recognizing that the relationship, at least in its current form, isn't working.
That is why the question, “Does this person love me?” may only be the beginning of what you really need to understand.
Feelings, Intentions and Actions Tell Different Stories
When I work with people who are confused about a relationship, one of the things I pay attention to is the difference between feelings, intentions and actions. Feelings tell us what someone may be experiencing emotionally. Intentions tell us what they are considering doing about those feelings. Actions show us what they are actually willing and able to do.
Those three things don't always line up. Someone may have deep feelings but no intention of pursuing the relationship. Someone else may genuinely consider coming back but repeatedly allow fear, pride or circumstances to stop them. Another person may continually return because they miss you without actually being prepared to create the relationship you hoped for.
This is something I explore more deeply in my article, Can a Psychic Tell You How Someone Really Feels About You?. Understanding someone's feelings can bring clarity, but sometimes the more important question is what those feelings are actually leading them to do.
Why Would Someone Walk Away If They Still Have Feelings?
There isn't one answer. Fear can make people pull away from the very thing they want. Past relationship wounds can make emotional intimacy uncomfortable. Someone may feel overwhelmed by the intensity of a connection, or they may be afraid of rejection, commitment, responsibility or repeating painful experiences from their past. Timing and outside circumstances can affect relationships as well.
But there is another possibility that can be harder to accept: sometimes someone has feelings for you but simply isn't prepared to offer you what you need. That doesn't necessarily mean the connection wasn't real. It does, however, raise a much deeper question: Is love enough when someone isn't willing or able to build a relationship around it?
What If They Keep Coming Back?
This is where relationships can become especially confusing. Someone walks away, then suddenly contacts you. You reconnect and, for a moment, everything feels familiar again. The chemistry is still there. They may tell you they missed you. You begin wondering whether the separation finally made them realize what they were losing—and then they pull away again.
When someone repeatedly leaves and returns, it's natural to focus on the fact that they came back. But sometimes you need to look just as closely at what happens after they return. Has anything actually changed? Are they communicating differently? Are they taking responsibility for what happened? Are they moving toward you with intention, or are they responding to loneliness, attraction, nostalgia or the fear of losing you completely?
A return can mean something, but what it means depends upon the person, the relationship and what has actually changed since they walked away. If you're experiencing this kind of connection, you may also want to read Will My Ex Come Back? Signs the Connection May Not Be Over.
Sometimes the Silence Is What Hurts Most
When someone clearly tells you why they are leaving, at least you have something concrete to process. Many relationships don't end that cleanly. Instead, someone becomes distant. Messages become shorter. Calls become less frequent. Affection changes. You know something feels different, but nobody actually tells you what changed.
That's when your mind begins filling in the blanks. Did I do something wrong? Are they afraid of their feelings? Is there someone else? Do they still think about me? Are they waiting for me to reach out? Are they trying to move on? Will they come back?
And perhaps the biggest question of all: Is this relationship actually over, or are we simply going through a period of separation?
Those are very different possibilities.
Love Doesn't Always Disappear When a Relationship Ends
One of the misconceptions about breakups is that someone must stop loving you before they can leave you. That isn't always what happens. Feelings can linger long after two people stop communicating. You can love someone and know you cannot continue the relationship as it currently exists. You can miss someone and still believe separation is necessary. You can even wonder whether you made the wrong decision while remaining uncertain about returning.
That emotional gray area is exactly what makes some relationships so difficult to understand. There may still be a connection, but the existence of a connection doesn't automatically tell you what happens next.
The Question Beneath “Do They Still Love Me?”
Sometimes the question you begin with isn't the question you ultimately need answered. You may start with, “Do they still love me?” But underneath that question may be something much deeper. Do they regret leaving? Are they thinking about coming back? Why haven't they contacted me? What are they afraid of? Is someone else influencing the situation? Are their feelings strong enough for them to actually do something about them? If they return, will anything be different this time?
Those questions move beyond whether love exists and begin exploring the direction of the relationship itself.
What Is Happening in Your Connection?
A general article can explain why someone might love another person and still walk away. What it cannot tell you is why your person walked away. Your relationship has its own history. There may be feelings that were never expressed, fears that were never discussed, circumstances you don't fully understand, or patterns between the two of you that continue to repeat.
If someone has walked away and you're still feeling the connection, my Love & Relationship Email Reading gives you a private way to explore the questions surrounding your specific situation. You can tell me what happened, provide the first names and birthdates involved, and ask the relationship question that has been weighing on you.
During your reading, I can intuitively explore the energy surrounding your connection, the emotions and intentions I pick up around the situation, what may be influencing the distance between you, and where I feel the relationship may be heading. Rather than continuing to wonder about all the possibilities, a personal reading allows us to focus specifically on your relationship and your questions.
Because sometimes the question isn't simply whether someone loves you.
It's what they intend to do about those feelings—and whether this story between you is actually finished.
