Woman at sunset by candlelit table; memorial text asks if loved ones can hear us after they die, with Serenity Stone logo.
A woman contemplates at sunset, surrounded by warm candlelight and flowers, as an ethereal figure appears in the clouds. The scene evokes a sense of connection and reflection, pondering the presence of loved ones beyond this life.

Have you ever found yourself talking to someone you love who has passed away?

Maybe you talk to them while driving. Maybe you say goodnight to them before you go to sleep. Maybe you stand in front of their photograph and tell them about your day. Or perhaps, during one of those moments when grief suddenly comes rushing back, you simply say, “I miss you. I wish you were here.”

And then comes the question so many people quietly wonder:

Can they actually hear us?

As a psychic medium who has worked with clients for more than 25 years, I have heard this question countless times. People want to know whether death ends communication or whether the people we love remain aware of us after they leave their physical bodies.

From my experience with mediumship, I believe the connection can continue. But communication with Spirit doesn't necessarily happen the way we expect it to.

Does Our Connection With Someone End When They Die?

When someone dies, their physical presence is gone. We can no longer pick up the phone and hear their voice or walk into another room and see them sitting there. That physical absence can make grief incredibly painful.

But love is different.

The relationship you had with someone was made up of far more than their physical body. It included memories, emotions, experiences, conversations, laughter, disagreements, private jokes, traditions and thousands of little moments that created a bond between you.

Many spiritual traditions and people who have experienced mediumship believe that consciousness continues after physical death and that those bonds may allow some form of communication to continue as well.

For some people, that possibility becomes especially powerful when something happens that feels far too personal to dismiss.

What Happens When You Talk to Someone Who Has Passed?

You don't need special words.

You don't need candles.

You don't need a ritual.

And you certainly don't need to be a psychic medium to speak to someone you love.

If there is something you want to say, say it.

Tell them you love them. Tell them you're angry. Tell them what happened today. Tell them about the new grandbaby they never got to meet. Tell them you're sorry. Tell them you forgive them.

Ask the question you've been carrying around for years.

Then pay attention.

Because sometimes the most interesting part isn't what you say.

It's what happens afterward.

Could They Be Answering You?

This is where people often become uncertain.

They talk to a loved one and later something unusual happens.

A song associated with that person suddenly plays.

Their name appears somewhere unexpected.

A familiar scent seems to come from nowhere.

An object associated with them turns up after being missing for years.

A memory suddenly enters your mind with extraordinary clarity.

Or perhaps you dream about them and wake up feeling as though you actually spent time together.

Does every one of these experiences mean a deceased loved one is communicating with you?

Not necessarily.

Coincidences happen. Memories surface naturally. Grief itself can influence dreams, thoughts and emotions.

But sometimes an experience feels different enough that you stop and think:

Was that you?

That question is often where spiritual awareness begins.

Dreams May Be One of the Ways We Experience Connection

One of the most commonly reported experiences after losing someone is dreaming about them.

But people frequently tell me that certain dreams don't feel like ordinary dreams.

The person may appear healthy again. They may look younger. They may say very little, yet somehow the dream carries an enormous emotional message. Sometimes there is simply a hug or a feeling of peace.

And when you wake up, the feeling stays with you.

I've written more about this in How to Interpret Spiritual Dreams Clearly, including how to look at these experiences without assuming that every vivid dream must be a spiritual message.

Sometimes the difference isn't found in the imagery itself.

It's found in how the experience feels.

Why Don't They Just Give Us an Obvious Sign?

This is one of the biggest questions surrounding mediumship.

If someone we love can communicate with us, why don't they simply do something undeniable?

Why not move something across the room?

Why not appear directly in front of us?

Why not simply say, “I'm here”?

Perhaps because spiritual communication, if it occurs, doesn't operate under the same physical rules we're accustomed to.

As a medium, I don't experience Spirit exactly the same way I experience someone physically standing in front of me. Information can come through impressions, images, emotions, memories, words, sensations or an unexpected knowing.

That's also one reason people can overlook experiences that may feel meaningful.

They're expecting a booming voice.

Instead, they get a whisper.

What If You've Asked for a Sign and Nothing Happened?

This can hurt.

I've spoken with people who have practically begged a loved one for a sign and received nothing they could recognize.

Please don't automatically interpret that silence as meaning the person isn't there or doesn't love you.

Grief can make us desperately search for confirmation. And when we're searching that intensely, sometimes we become so focused on what the answer is supposed to look like that we overlook something quieter.

There is also nothing wrong with acknowledging that we cannot explain every experience.

Mediumship isn't about manufacturing proof or forcing a particular person to communicate.

It's about becoming receptive to what comes through.

That's an important distinction, and it's something I discuss further in Your Guide to Private Mediumship Sessions.

Can Our Loved Ones Know What's Happening in Our Lives?

This is another fascinating question.

People sometimes wonder whether a parent who passed knows they got married. Whether a grandmother knows about the baby who was born after she died. Whether a spouse knows that their partner eventually found happiness again.

And sometimes during mediumship work, information comes through that appears connected to events that happened after someone passed.

Those are often incredibly emotional moments.

Because underneath the question, “Do they know?” is usually another question:

“Are they still part of my life?”

For someone grieving, that question can mean everything.

You May Already Be Talking to Them More Than You Realize

Think about the person who came into your mind while you were reading this.

There's probably a reason you thought of that particular person.

Maybe you've already been talking to them.

Maybe you've been asking them for something.

Maybe something unusual has been happening lately.

Or maybe you simply miss them and wish you could know that they're okay.

You don't have to stop talking to them.

Say what is in your heart.

Then allow yourself to become quiet enough to notice what follows without forcing every coincidence into being a message.

There is a beautiful middle ground between skepticism and believing that absolutely everything is a sign.

That's where discernment lives.

When You Want to Explore the Connection More Deeply

Sometimes reading about Spirit isn't enough because the questions are deeply personal.

Is my loved one around me?

Have they been trying to get my attention?

Was that dream really them?

Is there something they want me to know?

Why do I suddenly feel their presence after all these years?

Those aren't questions a general article can answer about your individual experience.

If you've been feeling a loved one around you—or you've simply been longing for the opportunity to explore whether a connection may be possible—you can schedule a private 30-Minute Insight Immersion with me.

The Half-Hour Insight Immersion:

This longer phone session gives us more room to settle into the reading, explore what you're experiencing and, when Spirit comes through, allow space for mediumship messages and validation.

I never guarantee that a particular person will come through. Mediumship doesn't work like placing a telephone call to Spirit, and I believe it's important to be honest about that.

But we can open the space and see what unfolds.

Sometimes the question isn't simply whether our loved ones can hear us after they die.

Maybe the deeper question is:

What if someone you've been talking to has already been trying to answer you?
